We’ve been reviewing how to get started with ChatGPT. The last article went a little deeper into creating custom agents for very specific, more involved tasks. Creating custom agents is the best way to get detailed, comprehensive solutions, but it also requires programming skills preferably in Python or JavaScript.

Why Do You Need to Train ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is very powerful and can provide versatile advice and on many subjects. Many datasets on books, documentation, websites, and more have already been input into its vast dataset.

But it doesn’t know exactly what your organization does and what you need. A software service organization’s needs are going to be quite different than a children’s clothing store.

Plus, ChatGPT isn’t trained daily by its creators, so the more data you can provide the better.

Customizing ChatGPT with your data can be similar to onboarding new hires so they understand as much as possible about your business before they start solving problems.

Using Prompts

Prompts include the data, documentation, information and instructions you feed into ChatGPT to guide it in generating responses. The more detail the better. Some service providers have templated prompts you can purchase and then tweak for your specific needs.

I ask ChatGPT to provide an example of a simple prompt. Here is the result:

“Explain the difference between machine learning and deep learning in simple terms, as if you’re talking to someone with no background in technology.”

I then asked ChatGPT to provide an example prompt to instruct it to write in my personal voice and tone.

“Help me write a [blog post/email/story/etc.] in my personal voice. My tone is [describe your tone — e.g., warm, witty, straightforward, professional, sarcastic, etc.], and I usually write like I’m talking to a friend. Here’s a sample of something I’ve written so you can match the style: [paste your writing sample]. Based on that, write a [type of content] about [topic].”

It’s very interesting to ask the tool you want to train on how you should train it, right?

After looking at a variety of prompts it’s really not that different than providing input to a new team member to take on a specific task based on specific parameters. Some of the prompts look like job descriptions plus background information on the company to complete the task.

Create a Custom GPT

Creating custom GPTs is a level of customization where you are training a customized version of ChatGPT focused specifically on your tasks. You’ll need ChatGPT Plus to create custom GPTs.

The subscription fee is $20 per month for ChatGPT Plus but if you want to jump into the deep end of the pool here this might get you solutions faster for your needs.

You are basically creating a custom chatbot with your ChatGPT Plus account. After creating your custom chatbot you feed in the instructions or prompt that provides the baseline for the behavior.

Then you upload your training data. An example would be you need an AI chat bot to help with support needs. The more questions and answers and demographics about your customers you can provide, the closer your chat bot will be someone interacting with a human being.

If you are thinking, “I am still learning the contextual processes for using this thing, so I haven’t connected all the dots,” you are not alone. We all are!

Third Party Enabling Tools

Smart tech companies realize that no coding solutions for marketers and managers to increase AI efficiency are the wave of the future. Companies like Denser AI offers a no code solution which allows you to feed your data into their tool. It acts like a “bridge” between your data and the AI model. If the data you want to feed ChatGPT is on your website, these tools can crawl your website for the information which is pretty slick!

These companies are attempting to create more powerful solutions than what is currently available in ChatGPT. Third party, complimentary solutions are used everywhere in tech of course and AI tools are the latest wave.

These ChatGPT articles are no replacement for digging in and doing the work yourself, but I do hope they motivate you to take the plunge and not be intimidated by the technology.
