Keep a Journal of Competitive Content
Keeping a notebook of effective competitive marketing content and techniques can be very handy when it’s time to initiate something new in your organization
It Happens to All of Us So Write it Down
You’re minding your own business and pow! You come across something very compelling that makes you engage with the brand. You may do this more than you think.
It can be anything that causes you to engage. And it doesn’t have to be directly related to your industry either. It could be a clever ad, social post or even a billboard.
The point is that clever marketing should be analyzed from many angles on why it’s effective. If it pulled you in, then it might be worth analyzing.
You can extrapolate from the content and brainstorm on how it might possibly work for your company. Expanding your creative concepts can go a long way to generating creative marketing content.
Start with the basics of why you think the content is compelling and work backwards from there. Go outside the box with your thoughts and don’t constrain yourself just to just your industry. (People come to us for help because we work in almost every industry, not because we focus on just one industry. Variety can fuel unique creativity!)
Examples in My Journal
Here are some examples of what I am interested in. I have a PowerPoint deck of just clever and compelling pop ups from sites in all types of industries. Why? Because if you can dial in the formula for actionable pop ups, it can go a long way to generating new business. Sometimes I will review the examples and even try to use some of the concepts for our agency.
Another set of examples is engaging organic social posts. It’s getting harder all the time to achieve engagement in social due to so many companies vying for interest and interaction. Creating a journal of compelling content can help fuel ideas for your own content management.
Yet one more example is great marketing emails. I use a folder in my email platform and stash great emails there where I can go back and review the best ones. You can break these down into great content emails or emails with great subject lines that get you to open them or whatever strategy you are looking for.
You want to make sure you capture everything about the content that makes it effective so don’t forget imagery. Also if you come across a great website path for conversions you want to make sure you document it all. That’s why PowerPoint can be easy for this since you can drop screenshots into slides very quickly.
We Can’t Remember Everything
Everyone is so busy keeping their businesses running it’s nice to file the example away until you need them freeing up your mind for more important short-term tasks. Just remember to use your notes and the ideas!
