Running a Social Media Contest Part Three
This is the third of a three-part strategy on running effective social media contests. Check out Part One here or Part Two here. You can get back to this article from the first two.
Start At the Beginning If You Haven’t Already
Parts One and Two of this series provide some good advice even if you are familiar with social contests so please check out those articles first. They are quick and easy reads focused on strategy, goal setting and example contests that sets up this third article.
Salsa and Hummus Anyone?
This is a fun Instagram contest sponsored by Fresh Cravings. They work Instagram really well. On their profile page it says: “Don’t Just Dip, Dive into a world of flavor with Fresh Cravings dips! Follow us for a healthy snacking experience like no other!”
That’s pretty good action-oriented copy and of course the images of their products accompanied with some great looking food choices just begs for a like button click or a comment.

Notice the copy in the image doesn’t waste any time talking about the value of the sweepstakes! “A year of fresh cravings sweepstakes” says it all.
A one-year supply of their products for 12 grand prize winners sounds expensive for the company doesn’t it? But check this out. I reviewed the rules and prizes on their site. Each winner gets 48 coupons to use for the year redeemable for their products up to the 20 oz size. The retail value for each winner is $288 and the total retail value for all winners is $3,456. Even if their margins are in the 30% range after factoring in distributors and stores, this is not a bad value for contests that will run throughout the year to grow and engage their community right?
Plus it is a very efficient contest because they can post about the same contest multiple times! Excellent contest strategy.
Notice the rules include following them on Instagram (community growth) and uploading a picture of one of the products with multiple hashtags which increases reach, engagement and provides fun social proof for people seeing the brand for the first time.
You can enter on the website too, but you still have to perform the actions defined above so most people will stay on Instagram and do it all within the social channel.
The Bones Beneath My Skin, Advanced Reader Copy
Tor Books ran this contest offering advanced reader copies of a new book. This contest is also focused on community engagement and growth. The participants are asked to follow the brand, like the post, comment on the post using a tag and tag two friends who “you think might like the book.”
A really good strategy to fuel the Meta algorithm for community interaction. People responded too because they are fans of this publisher. The hardcover book is only about $25 but fans see well-crafted contests as fun to participate in. Please keep that in mind when you create yours!

Don’t Forget
Make the prizes relevant to what you offer because all of your entrants will become attractive leads for your business. Focus on the things that will move the needle for your business. Good luck and get in there and grow your social communities.
